The City of Cape Town has assured residents that its water is safe for drinking and is on par with locally set safety standards.

Mayor Patricia de Lille has visited a waste water treatment plants in Athlone to see for herself the work done to ensure water safety.

Cape Town is experiencing a persistent drought that has seen dam storage levels drop to unprecedented lows.

De Lille says residents have no reason to be concerned about the water quality.

She says, “Because of the water pressure reduction, what you will see is that sometimes the water will come out a bit brown-ish with an earthy smell. Sometimes people will say that the water is not safe to drink. I will ask people not to waste that water, rather to use it for the toilet flushing.”

“We test the water quality on a daily basis to make sure that the water is drinkable,” adds de Lille.
