The Cape of Good Hope Speak, Protect and Care for Animals (SPCA) has warned pet owners to be vigilant of the dangers of heat strokes when leaving their pets exposed to hot temperatures.

The Western Cape is currently in the grip of a heatwave with temperatures reaching the 40’s in places.

SPCA Spokesperson Belinda Abraham says when dogs and Persian cats are exposed to this harsh temperatures they are more susceptible to heat strokes. She says an overweight pet with heart and lung conditions should be kept indoors in an air-conditioned room.

“We must give them plenty of fresh clean water when it is hot outdoors and make sure that they have a shady space outside to keep out of the sun. It is also good to know what the symptoms of overheating in pets are. Also, never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. It can lead to fatal heat stroke.”
