Campaigning for votes in full swing

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It is 12 twelve days before South Africa goes to the polls and political parties have been crossing the country campaigning for votes.

However, some parties have faced challenges this past week. In the Free State and Mpumalanga some ANC members have taken their party to court.

Speaking on Morning Live, Political analyst Khaya Sithole says the issue at play in these cases is who goes into office after the elections.

He says some members are disgruntled as they feel the process has not been transparent enough.

However he says with Thabo Mbeki coming out in support of the ANC, some people might vote for the party again.

He says Mbeki’s endorsement of Cyril Ramaphosa might show that he is indeed a new leadership in the party and perhaps has a new way of doing things.

“EFF leader Julius Malema responded to Mbeki’s campaigning by saying it shows the ANC is afraid of the EFF that is why they are bringing out the “big guns” so to speak,” says Sithole.

Coming to the DA, Sithole says the party’s weak point is that it is seen as not paying homage to the traditional stalwarts of the liberation movement.

He says: “They do not have the 100 year history of the ANC, so it will always be difficult for them to say this is a stalwart who championed a particular cause.”

He says this is perhaps why in recent days they identified individuals with a certain social standing to honour them,  like Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s former personal assistant.
