Police in KwaZulu-Natal say the situation is calm at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) campuses. On Tuesday, clashes between students and campus security guards resulted in the death of one student, Mlungisi Madonsela, outside the Steve Biko campus.

The use of live ammunition by the security guards has been condemned by DUT management. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele, says police remain deployed at DUT to monitor the situation.

“Situation at DUT is stable. Police members are still stationed there to maintain visibility to monitor the situation and since yesterday we have never had any other violence. We cannot confirm what the status of them is today because they are suppose to appear in court I was told today,” says Mbhele.
