More calls against slave trade in Lybia

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Several organisations have marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria against slavery and human trafficking in Libya.

They are calling for investigations and the prosecution of smugglers auctioning Black Africans as slaves.

They were taking a stand against the new wave of slavery, that of Black African migrants and refugees in Libya.

The groups called for an end to crimes against humanity.

Activists submitted their demands to the Presidency, Libyan Embassy, African Union and the European Union.

They’ve also called on African leaders to impose political and economic sanctions against Libya.

Marc Gbaffou of the African Diaspora Forum says, “South Africa having experienced apartheid should condemn these slavery acts in the strongest and use its position to globally lobby action against it.”

The enslavement of Black Africans in Libya increased in 2011 with footage going viral that lead to an international uproar.

Most of the migrants, who are looking for greener pastures in Europe, use Libya as a gateway, but they end up being auctioned off and exploited as slaves.

Similar protests were held in other parts of the world, including Washington in the United States.

Activists vow to remain resolute until the enslavement of Black Africans in Libya is stopped.
