The City of Cape Town says it’s ready for New Year’s celebrations. Emergency services and law enforcement have been deployed to the central city and other popular destinations for the New Year’s eve mass celebrations.

Thousands of revellers are expected to converge on the V&A Waterfront, where security will be tight.

New Year’s Eve traditionally draws huge crowds to central Cape Town, the Waterfront, beaches and places of entertainment.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety JP Smith says city staff will be patrolling and monitoring celebrations and a zero tolerance approach will be taken. He says a number of integrated operations are planned, including roadblocks and checkpoints. He has again warned motorists not to drink and drive.

The last MyCiTi buses will depart from the Waterfront to the civic centre at 02:00 tomorrow morning.

Western Cape traffic authorities have warned motorists to be responsible as they head into the New Year.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says several people were arrested over the weekend for excessive speeding on the province’s roads.

He says a zero-tolerance approach will be maintained against those who do not abide by the law.

“We also arrested three speedsters, two in Swellendam for doing 145 in a 100 zone and 170 in a 100 zone. The other speedster was arrested in Somerset West on the N2 for doing 155km in an 80 zone.”
