Buthelezi describes Madikizela-Mandela as a ‘saint’

Inkatha Freedom Party leader, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, has labelled the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela as a ‘saint’ among South Africans.

The struggle icon passed away last week at the age of 81 and will be buried on Saturday.

Speaking at Madikizela Mandela’s state memorial service at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Buthelezi praised Mama Winnie for her resilience in tough times.

“I believe, as Madiba did, that a saint is not someone who has never sinned – a saint is merely a sinner who dies trying. Here, in Soweto where Mama Winnie lived and she was in exile and everywhere, she extended a hand to the poor, downtrodden and the struggling. Here she will be remembered as a saint and I think the outpouring of love and admiration that we see all over our country after her passing says to me that too all of us, she is indeed a saint.”
