Bus strike finally over

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The month-long national bus strike is over. Unions representing striking bus drivers are addressing media in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, about the details of the deal.

The strike saw commuters left stranded for weeks nationwide as drivers demanded a 9% wage hike.

The industrial action was prolonged after a deadlock between employers and unions as drivers demanded the backdating of the pay hike.

The unions announced on Friday that they had agreed on employers’ nine per cent wage increase offer for this year and eight per cent for next year.

However, they refused to sign because employers only want to effect the salary increase from the day the agreement is signed.

Workers want the salary increase to be backdated to April the first. Employers say that’s not affordable.

No incidents of violence were reported during the strike.
