Buffalo City Metro tightens beach security measures

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Eastern Cape’s Buffalo City Metro has raised safety measures in and around East London’s beaches as tourists flock into the area.

The East London beachfront has been the scene of numerous attacks on beach-goers in recent years.

In 2012, two Swedish tourists survived an attack from knife wielding thugs in the area and a year later prominent lawyer, Dali Mpofu, was also hospitalised following an attack in the same area.

The East London beachfront is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the province. It is frequented by both holidaymakers and locals.

The area has also become a hot spot for criminal activity.

Statistics show that between 2012 and 2016 close to 20 people were attacked on these beaches. There are mixed feelings about the safety of the beaches.

“I’m pleased with what I see.  There are people watching over the beach seeing what’s happening. If there are children drowning they’re easily accessible,” says one beachgoer.

Buffalo City Metro Mayor, Xola Phakathi, says they have beefed up security by introducing CCTV cameras, 24 new law enforcement officers and 36 life guards have been deployed to the area.

“We are ready for crooks if they come here to mug people and grab their cellphones and purses we will be ready for them. We will not tolerate any form of anarchy in our city.”

At least 18 CCTV cameras have been mounted in the city’s crime hot spots.

Joint operations between the municipality, police and the Social Development department will continue until the end of the festive season.
