BRICS members to boost film industries

Reading Time: 2 minutes

BRICS member countries are moving closer to a treaty which looks set to boost the film industries in these countries. Filmmakers and producers from the five BRICS nations took part in a forum discussion on the proposals in Durban.

A co-production and distribution treaty and a film fund are two of the major issues on the table.  Plans on these are to be presented to the BRICS Ministers of Culture meeting in September.

However, more concrete plans are likely to be implemented at the following BRICS sitting in Brazil in 2019.

Chief Director of Cultural Development in the Arts and Culture Department, Charles Mabaso says it’s important that the various heads come together to find as workable plan.

“The issue of a critical funding has to be what’s doable and what is presentable, so come Brazil 2019 we have an implementable deliverable plan.”

The film industries in South Africa, Brazil and Russia are small compared to those in India and China. But the roleplayers present agreed that the film industry can provide lucrative opportunities for all the countries. That’s if there’s closer co-operation, especially in the light of the fast-growing economies of the BRICS nations.

Filmmaker Sylvia Vollenhoven says: “Now we are being asked to think huge, think of the global market global federation. In 2021 the GDP of BRICS countries is going to be bigger than NATO, that is just a figure that blows your mind the potential is immense.”

There was also a call for young film makers to play a bigger role in future plans.

The forum is part of a five-day long BRICS Film festival during which films from BRICS member countries will be screened.

The festival coincides with the popular Durban International Film festival.
