Reading Time: 2 minutes

Botswana’s Vice President, Mokgweetsi Masisi has visited the Mangope family to convey his condolences. He said the late Bophuthatswana homeland President, Lucas Mangope, will be remembered as a decisive leader.

Botswana’s Vice President, comforting the Mangope family, says although Botswana did not recognise or support homelands but Mangope’s ability to lead was admirable.

“We as Botswana obviously did not recognize the homelands. We saw them as an extension of apartheid and toleration thereof, but we did not, in so doing, deny the fact that there was a sparkle and the competence in Mangope, and that’s what we wish to come and share and celebrate with everybody else.”

The Mangope family appreciated the visit.

Family spokesperson Bathoeng Mangope says:”For the deputy president to come here, he should be doing something in his country, but for him to set time aside to come and be part of this thing, we appreciate that and we realize that our father was such a giant. We don’t doubt that but for people to indicate that means so much to us.”

A memorial service is scheduled on Wednesday at the Motswedi Community Hall.

The funeral will be held at the Mangope family home on Sunday.
