Black managers in media doubled: Report

Reading Time: < 1 minute

There have been dramatic shifts in the race and gender composition of media houses over the past 12 years.

Black men now make up half of top media managers while the proportion of black women has increased five-fold over this period.

The results are revealed in the Glass Ceilings survey undertaken by the SA National Editors forum and Genderlinks.

The proportion of Black men in top management in the media has more than doubled from 22% in 2006 to 50% in 2018.

The number of Black women in the same space has drastically risen from 6% in 2006 to 30% this year. There are more female news presenters and producers but there’s been a significant drop in skilled and qualified workers such as reporters and sub-editors.

The report also found that sexist attitudes persist in the industry both in the office and on the field.
