Berg River Canoe Marathon to kick off on Wednesday

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The 58th edition of the 240 kilometre Berg River Canoe Marathon starts in Paarl in the Boland on Wednesday.

The Berg is one of the longest and toughest ultra-canoe marathons in the world.

This year, the race takes place in bitterly cold weather conditions.

Event chairperson Enslin van Riet says recent good soaking winter rains mean that paddlers will have a flowing river.

“After four very low years where the water levels were way down and we had to cut out certain sections of the river, this year at least the water levels are high. More rain is predicted, it’s not going to be a flooded river at all but it will be much better than the previous four years,” says Van Riet.
