Trade union Bemawu has called off the strike at the SABC after the union and management reached an agreement on Friday night.

The union has accepted a 4.8% salary increase backed dated by nine months.

The increase will be added to salaries in January 2018.

The other union, Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) has not indicated whether it has accepted the SABC’s offer.

SABC workers were demanding 10% salary increase while the SABC management was offering 4.5% backdated to October.

On Friday South African Communist Party also throw its weight behind the workers strike.

SACP’s Mhlekwa Nxumalo says:”We want to make a call to all workers of the SABC those that are organised and those that are unorganised to be united behind the call that is being made by the striking workers.”

“It is important to unite and make sure that the SABC responds to the demands that have been placed to the table for wage increases as well as addressing some of the working conditions that they are working under.”

On Thursday Cosatu called on Communications Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane and the SABC board to intervene and ensure that worker’ demands are met.
