Behaviour of road users contributes to fatalities: AA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Automobile Association SA (AA) says the behaviour of road users contributes to fatalities.

The Department of Transport says it is going to double visibility of law enforcement officers on the roads as the Festive Season nears the end.

This as road crashes continue to increase and claim lives.

In Gauteng, authorities have already reported that the number of crashes is more than last year at the same time.

AA spokesperson Layton Beard says, “The number of fatalities so far in Gauteng is already more than it was the whole of the festive season last year and those are certainly very worrying statistics. When we look at what the challenges are it’s still going to come down to driver behaviour, people who are not obeying the rules of the road and we can’t leave road safety in the hands of the authorities alone. Road safety has to begin with motorists and with pedestrians as well.”

Meanwhile, a driver has been killed and a passenger injured after their vehicle hit a kudu on the N1 between Beaufort West and Three Sisters in the Western Cape Karoo on Wednesday night.

This was one of two fatal car crashes on that national road in the province overnight.

Western Cape Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa, says the other one occurred on the N1 just outside Worcester.

“A driver of a light delivery vehicle lost control over the vehicle. In this accident the driver lost his life. Three passengers were slightly injured and a female passenger seriously injured. They were taken to the Worcester Hospital.”
