Befitting to honour the spirit of Naude by promoting the rights of the abused: Madonsela

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former public protector Thuli Madonsela says to end the abuse against women and children, society needs to be healed.

Madonsela was delivering the Beyers Naude Memorial Lecture at the University of Zululand in eMpangeni on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The late Naude resisted apartheid. Madonsela says it would be befitting to honour the spirit of Naude by promoting the rights of the abused, especially of women and children.

“Beyers’s lesson to us is if we want a peaceful world you have to think about justice as justice beyond just us. And when you think about child abuse you think about what it means to me. Living in the world that undermines the right of poor people, living in the world where children shall pay the high price particularly for being poor. I am not though saying rich people do not experience violence.”
