Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, says giving quality and equal education to young South Africans should be a befitting tribute to the role played by 1976 learners.

Maimane, accompanied by DA members, laid a wreath at Hector Peterson’s Memorial site in Soweto in honour of the young people who took the stand against apartheid 42 years ago.

On Saturday, the country will commemorate the 42nd anniversary of June 16, 1976, known as Youth Day.

1976 was a year that saw young people stand up against the apartheid system, demanding that Afrikaans be abolished as a medium of instruction.

Maimane was accompanied by Noble Mabaso’s family which lost one of its own in the ’76 uprising.  Nine-year-old Noble Mabaso was shot by the brutal apartheid police outside his home during the unrest.

“I’m grateful to be here, although it’s been long since it happened, but it’s still painful like a wound, but what can I say?,” says Noble Mabaso’s mother, Violet.

The DA says all those who played a role in the uprising must be honoured.

Maimane will address students at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
