Bafana off to a losing start in the AFCON 2021 qualifiers in Ghana

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bafana Bafana’s 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign got off to a bad start as they lost 2-0 to Ghana in Cape Coast on Thursday night.

It was not an inspiring performance at all for the South African men’s senior national football team as they succumbed to the Black Stars.

Two costly mistakes by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and Thamsanqa Mkhize gifted Thomas Partey and Kudus Mohammed the goals.

Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki who was in charge of his first official match on the day, says they lost to a better team on the day.

There were few chances for Bafana in the first half with Bradley Grobler’s shot missing the cross bar by few inches.

Maritzburg United goalkeeper Richard Ofori was not tested in the second half and this would be a concern to Ntseki.

This was Bafana’s first loss in the AFCON qualifiers since September 2016 and they will be under pressure to respond on Sunday when they host Sudan in their second qualifier at Orlando Stadium.

The Falcons of Jadiane are topping Group D after thumping Sao Tome and Principe 4-0 in the opening game. Ntseki is expected to come out with a very offensive team on Sunday.

Coming to this game, Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah was under pressure to deliver a result after a disappointing performance at the AFCON in Egypt.

But his team, which also featured some debutants on the night, responded. He reflects on the win after coming to this game.

The top two teams qualify from the group will qualify to Cameroon 2021 and Ghana play their second game away to Sao Tome and Principe on Monday.  – Report by Velile Mnyandu
