Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hundreds of thousands of South African children are preparing for their first day of school on Wednesday.

Public schools across the country will open for the first day of class for 2018.

Nearly 13-million children attend public schools in the country.

South Africa continues to spend more than most other developing nations on education.

However, the country has yet to see a substantial improvement in the quality of education for most youngsters.

Meanwhile, Gauteng schools are ready to welcome 130 000 grade 1 learners.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says although the province is still experiencing problems with the placement of Grades 1 and 8, the rest of the system is ready.

He says he is also putting measures in place for the province to be back in the number one spot in matric results.

“Majority of learners are in grade one to four – that’s the large chunk which is almost 90% of our school environment. That aspect is well covered because we know who is coming who will teach them. We have given them furniture and we have given them stationary.”
