The African Transformation Movement (ATM) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has expressed concern about the crime rate in the province, saying it is far too high.

The party says it will make fighting crime in the province its priority should it win the May elections.

The party took its election campaign to KwaMashu, north of Durban.

Its KwaZulu-Natal premier candidate Mxolisi Phakathi says he is hopeful that the party will do well in the upcoming elections.

He says: “The most important thing that we want to do is to fight crime. KZN is one of the provinces that crime is growing everyday and people are being killed everyday.

“Fighting crime is where we need to start. We can not grow the economy if there is no peace. People will carry on burning government buildings.”

“We need peace and stability in the province,” adds Phakathi.
