ASA to challenge IAAF’s “anti-Caster Clause”

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has confirmed it will challenge the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)’s new regulations, which are fast becoming known as the “Caster Clause”.

ASA says it has consulted with the Sports Minister, South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) expert institutions and other relevant organisations, and reached the conclusion that the new rules are skewed.

The rules, scheduled to come into force on November 1, limit the testosterone levels for female athletes in five disciplines, covering all of Semenya’s specialty distances.

ASA says they will first engage with the IAAF itself, and if they don’t succeed there, they are prepared to challenge the rules at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
