Armed security to guard Mpumalanga health facilities

The Department of Community, Safety, Security and Liaison in Mpumalanga, is to deploy armed security guards to all health facilities in order to strengthen security measures. This follows a protest by health workers at Mapulaneng hospital in Bushbuckridge over poor safety measures at the hospital.

Department spokesperson Joseph Mabuza, says the security improvement will be implemented in all the hospitals in the province on Wednesday.

“In view of safety of the workers, patients who go to hospital and the visitors we have taken a decision to step up security measures in those hospitals, it will also be followed by improving in those hospitals to make sure that the people and property is safe”

Meanwhile, work has resumed at the hospital in Bushbuckridge after doctors and nurses embarked on a protest over a series of concerns including demanding improvement of security measures.

According to the South African Medical Association (SAMA), the health workers took a decision to resume work on Monday.

Secretary of the association, Sifiso Nxumalo says they are still waiting for the department to provide feedback on all their demands.

“They agreed to go back to work with a view that we gonna have a strong delegation we are going to go to the boardroom and decisions are gonna be made and we are going to start seeing changes during the week, but as it stands right now the situation is calm the workers are back at work and we are waiting for the delegation to arrive so that we can proceed with the meeting.”
