Another political killing: MKMVA member shot dead in Mpumalanga

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A case of murder and pointing of a firearm is being investigated after a member of Umkhonto Wesizwe Veterans League was killed and another escaped without injuries during an ANC Youth League conference in Manzana near Barberton in Mpumalanga.

It is alleged that the MKMVA member was killed following a clash between them and a group of people who were allegedly misbehaving outside the conference area.

The ANC Youth League in the province has since condemned the killing.

Despite several calls made by different political leaders in the country, and King Goodwill Zwelithini the political killings continue.

On Saturday a member of Umkhonto Wesizwe veteran’s league was shot and killed during the ANC Youth League regional conference that was held in Manzana near Barberton in Mpumalanga.

The 47 year-old was deployed to provide security at the ANC youth League regional conference.

Police say the deceased was killed following a scuffle and violence that erupted after a group of people who were kicked out of the conference.

Police Spokesperson in the province Mtsholi Bhembe says the police had a tough time last night.

“There came people at the police station or a person coming to lay a complaint that he has been pointed with a fire arm and shot five times but fortunately he was never hit. Another report came that at the resort where the ANC conference was underway there was violence and a person has been shot. When police probed what happened it was reported that some group of people came and making noise apparently under the influence of alcohol and the security that was taking care of the place then took the people out of the conference room and as well out of the gates. The some people started trowing stones at the security office and then gun shots were heard coming from the people who were throwing stones.”

ANC Youth League Secretary in Mpumalanga, Pholoso Mbatsane says the people who were kicked out of the conference wanted to take part at the conference without following proper procedures.

Mbhatsane also claims that those people are not members of the ANC youth league.

“The information that we got was that apparently there is a group of people that was rented to go and disrepute the congress of the ANC Youth league at Gert Sibande. There was a scuffle between those people and the security and part of our security we normally use the MKVA when we have events. So we are told that the people wanted to be part of the conference without being properly registered.”

Mbatsane says the conference continued after the incident and all candidates were elected unopposed.
