The African National Congress (ANC) has expressed shock at the brutal killing of another leader Maqatha Mchunu at his home in Hammarsdale, in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

Mchunu’s death comes after several murders of political leaders in the province.

Last week, ANC member Sifiso Cele was also killed at oShabeni Ward 4 on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast in the Lower South Coast region.

Also last on Friday night, a prominent Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader from Zululand was gunned down in Ulundi, in north KwaZulu-Natal.

Samkelo Dlamini, an IFP Youth Brigade chairperson, was ambushed while driving on the main road and died on the scene. Close to thirty provincial ANC leaders have been killed in less than thirty six months.

Mchunu was allegedly ambushed when he arrived at the gate of his home on Friday night.

The ANC’s Sithembiso Mshengu says party delegation is currently visiting the family of the slain leader.

“We were disturbed and shocked last night when we heard the message that that comrade Mchunu was murdered at the gate of his house on Friday night. We are on our way to visit the family right now. We are on our way to visit the family right now.”

“We will issues a full statement later on Saturday. We wish to convey our condolences to the family, his friend and members of the ANC who love peace. We are disturbed by this well-coordinated campaign to ambush and kill some of us in the province. We hope police will do their work,” says Mshengu.
