Andre Manuel on being coloured

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In the context of Heritage Day and Heritage Month, Abra Barbier tackled the thorny topic of what it means to be Coloured in South Africa.

Creative activist Andre Manuel grew up in Athlone, on the Cape Flats. During the struggle, Athlone was a hotbed of political activity, and children growing up there, had no choice but to socially aware. It was no different for Manuel, who despite acknowledging being black, celebrated having a different culture to his countrymen.

Manuel agrees the term Coloured was derogatory. Today, however, he says he has reclaimed that word.
