The African National Congress’ (ANC) January 8 statement due to be delivered over the weekend is set to be a major boost for the business community in East London.

Between 150 000 and 200 000 people are expected to descend on the Eastern Cape city for the event on Saturday.

Food outlets, hawkers and the hospitality industry are starting to see the gains.

Les Holbrook of the Border-Kei Chamber of Business says the event brings a much welcomed economic boost.

“Coming out of the holiday season with obviously most of the tourists going home, East London has had a very good season as far as festivities are concerned. December/January are normally good for the metro in terms of spending in the city. The upcoming ANC rally is going to bring a huge boost in the East London region. We are looking forward to it. We think it is going to bring a huge boost for hospitality in terms of the hotels, BnBs and hotels because people have to stay in places.”
