ANC urged to unite ahead of Mama Winnie’s funeral

Political analyst Lesiba Teffo has appealed for members of the African National Congress (ANC) to behave in a unified manner in the run-up to and during the funeral of anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The icon passed away last week at the age of 81.

Madikizela-Mandela will be laid to rest on Saturday in Fourways, north of Johannesburg.

Teffo emphasised that Mama Winnie and former president Nelson Mandela both fought for unity and cohesion within the ruling party.

He says she deserves a befitting farewell.

“We have all agreed that she has made tremendous contributions, and I think let them just suspend the politicking within the party because it is all about the factions within the organisation… we had hoped we would work on a collective programme, but I am appealing to them to suspend whatever it is and then just walk in unity, hand in hand as per the culture that nurtured you in the spirit of Ubuntu. Let’s give her a fitting farewell and later on you can go and play your politics.”
