The African Nation Congress (ANC) has again topped the polls in KwaZulu-Natal. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the province is now the official opposition.

With all the voting districts in the province completed  the ANC’s support has declined from 64.52% in the 2014 elections to 54.21% in 2019.

KZN ANC provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli has attributed the decline to the challenges that were faced by the party in recent years.

“The decline you are seeing now is a reflection of the tragedy. We have gone through that as an organisation, we started to prepare for the election in October because we were caught up in the processes on conferences and when you prepare for the conference you can hardly have a focussed team of comrades to run for the elections. The second reason is that we have had municipalities where people have been complaining about things that were affecting their livelihood.”
