ANC spokesperson in Gauteng is concerned about Mashaba’s leadership

The spokesperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng, Motalatale Modiba says City of Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s habit of removing members of his mayoral committee is destabilising the city and the Gauteng region.

Modiba says Mashaba changes his structure every six months and has fired four MMC’s since August 2016 for a variety of reasons.

Modiba says, “They either lack the required leadership skills or they were found involved in fraud or corruption or they refused to toe the line.”

“This has seriously impacted on the functioning of affected departments. I mean you cannot have instability in a department like finance, you cannot have instability in a department like environment and infrastructure and development, economic development. Those are critical departments within the city that has sort of slowed down service delivery in the city,” says Modiba.

Mashaba’s spokesperson, Luyanda Mfeka, says any changes brought on by the city are made with the needs of the residents in mind.

“Had the ANC been able to keep the members of its executive to account, both for their conduct and for their performance, the ANC would still be in power today.”

Mfeka says, it’s unfortunate for the members that have been removed, “the mayor has never shied away from holding those members of his executive to account in order to make sure that we look after the best interest of residents in the city.”
