ANC presidential race playing out on Twitter

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Six of the seven candidates running for the presidential position to lead Africa’s oldest liberation movement, the African National Congress, have taken their campaigning to social media platforms in a major way.

Twitter is the medium of choice for front-runners Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Cyril Ramaphosa and Lindiwe Sisulu with Ramaphosa’s account appearing to be the most active considering the number of tweets published (706 )in a space of 30 days.

Sisulu’s tweet count in the 30 days was 465 with Zweli Mkhize having 437 tweets.

Mkhize, Mathews Phosa and Jeff Radebe have also been busy doing public appearences to bolster their campaigns.

With current ANC Chairperson Baleka Mbete being the only candidate who has not been using twitter recently.

Her last update on her account was in April 2017.

All six candidate accounts are registered under their own names, with only Ramaphosa’s account appearing to be a campaign specific account registered as – CR17Siyavuma.

Will the numbers on social media translate to votes at the ANC’s 54th National Conference?
