Shack dwellers in Clermont, west of Durban, expressed disappointment that African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa campaigned a stone-throw away from their settlement.

The residents were hoping the ANC leadership would bring Ramaphosa to see their plight but he instead visited a more established part of the township.

Ramaphosa was on an election campaign for the third day in Durban. Scores lined the streets, hoping for a chance to speak to the ANC President.

But it was those from the selected homes who were lucky enough to sit with him.

A resident Sithembiso Nheko says that he is a graduate but his degree is being withheld as the NSFAS hasn’t paid his fees. So he has been sitting at home because he can’t get a job.

Just metres away from where the President was campaigning, is the Vezunyawo Informal Settlement. People there were looking forward to the President’s visit. They say they live in squalor and have waited for years for development.

Addressing the crowds, Ramaphosa said government is doing all it can to address the unemployment challenges in the country.

The ANC concluded their campaign at KwaXimba, west of Durban.
