ANC NWC announces two women as Premiers Elect

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress’ National Working Committee has announced two women as Premiers Elect for the Free State and Mpumalanga respectively.  They are Sisi Ntombela and Refiloe Mtshweni.

The two positions became vacant after Free State Premier Ace Magashule assumed the role of the ANC Secretary- General while Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza was appointed party deputy president.

The two were also provincial chairpersons of the governing party. The election of David Mabuza as Deputy President and Ace Magashule as the governing party’s Secretary General left two vacancies in their provinces.

ANC Women’s League deputy president Sisi Ntombela will succeed Ace Magashule as Free State Premier. While Refiloe Mtshweni will take the reigns as Mpumalanga’s number one.

There are now four women premiers in nine provinces.

Ace Magashule says, “The NWC believes that the two women nominated as Premiers Elect will take forward the agenda of radical socio-economic transformation. The nomination of the Premiers Elect demonstrates that the ANC is a true non-sexist organisation and continues to recognize the existing leadership capacity of the women within our organisation.”

The women who will soon be at the helm are up for the challenge.

The Working Committee also deliberated on the Sbu Ndebele report, which investigated the Eastern Cape conference where some branches were aggrieved that processes were not followed properly.

It is believed the task team recommends that the election of the Provincial Executive Committee be nullified, but Magashule says the issue will be taken to the National Executive Committee for further discussion.

The party has committed itself to implementing conference resolutions.

Meanwhile, the governing party has welcomed progress made during the first round of voter registration weekend.
