ANC did not discuss ways to implement free higher education

Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) sub-committee on Education, Health and Technology Naledi Pandor says they did not discuss how they are going to implement, free higher education, as they had an assurance from Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba that the matter will be dealt with during his budget speech.

Pandor was speaking at a media briefing at Nasrec in Johannesburg. She says there is a strong call for government to implement free higher education for young people from poor and working class backgrounds.

“Also a very very strong call that government must speedily implement the free higher education for poor and working class background and to help middle class and see government implement from 2018. The conference said this is something they want to see government implement from 2018 and they welcomed the announcements that have been made by president Zuma.”

Pandor says the 54th ANC National Conference accepted the resolution that all schools must teach three languages to promote cohesion in the country. Pandor says the Basic Education Department must also intensify efforts to improve literacy and numeracy in all grades, especially at the foundation stage.

Meanwhile, sub-committee member Enver Surtie also addressed the media at Nasrec. He says the aim of the proposed Basic Education Laws Amendments Bill is not to take power away from School Governing Bodies.
