ANC national leadership urged to recall Mahumapelo

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are growing calls that the African National Congress (ANC) national leadership step in to recall embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

The provincial youth and veterans league are the latest to demand that he steps down.

This follows an about-turn by Mahumapelo who reneged on his pledge to resign from office.

The move is seen as a snub to the ANC National Working Committee (NWC) which has recommended that he be recalled.

The Premier’s fate and the fragile security situation in the North West was subject of cabinet discussions in Cape Town, whose outcomes will be announced on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Mahumapelo took leave from office and appointed Finance MEC Wendy Nelson to be acting Premier.

One of the North West’s prominent political activist Solly Bokaba says, “The North West Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the ANC is not a legitimate structure. It is a group of psychopaths around him because their aim is to disrupt the ANC.”

“He wants to collapse the government and cause mayhem within the organisation and we are saying the National Executive Committee (NEC) and President [Cyril Ramaphosa] must be steadfast and help the people of North West and South Africa by ensuring that Mr Mahumapelo must be removed,” explains Bokaba.
