ANC members urged to refrain from using memorials as attack platforms

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) has urged its members to refrain from using memorial lectures and funerals to attack each other. Several activities including memorial lectures have been planned for the late struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

In the recent past, some in the ANC have used such lectures and funerals to take a swipe at each other.

Former President Jacob Zuma was strongly criticised at the funeral of the late Ahmed Kathrada.

ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule says funerals cannot be used as platforms for factional battles.

Meanwhile, the St Georges Cathedral in Cape Town will host an interfaith service in memory and celebration of  Madikizela-Mandela on Thursday evening.

Father Michael Weeder of the St. George’s Cathedral, also known as the “People’s church for its role in the resistance against apartheid”, is inviting Capetonians to come and pay their respects and share their stories. Speakers will include former Finance Minister Trevor Manual, former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor and former ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

Mourners are encouraged to place flowers at a public shrine and write a message in the Remembrance Book. It will later be handed to the Mandela family.”
