ANC leadership to address unity issues in KZN

President Cyril Ramaphosa says national leadership will assist party structures in KwaZulu-Natal in addressing  concerns that some party members have raised to forge unity in the province.

African National Congress(ANC) national chairperson Gwede Mantashe, deputy secretary-general, Jessie Duarte and treasurer-general Paul Mashatile met with the Provincial Task Team and leaders from Moses Mabhida, Lower South Coast and Harry Gwala regions.

The three regions have been marred by political killings with Moses Mabhida being the latest region to record killings.

Ramaphosa says: “Through the discussion we have had with the leadership in the region as well as the leadership in the province, we have decided that discussions will continue involving the national leaders.”

“We will also be looking forward at receiving the report from the commission of enquiry that was set up by the premier,” says Ramaphosa.

Senior leaders say the killings are worrying and pose a threat to the stability of the province.

ANC NEC member Zizi Kodwa says: “To what extent these killings are linked to the regional conferences is early to speculate. Law enforcement agencies are dealing with very complex situations about some of these lack of arrests and convictions of these killings which create more complex problems to those that we are already dealing with. But it’s early days to link any killing to a conference at the moment.”

Four regions held elective conferences this past weekend. The outcome of these meetings is expected to decide on the way forward.
