ANC lambastes AfriForum’s attempt to remove Lesufi from office

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng says lobby group AfriForum’s campaign to remove Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi from office is inspired by race and a desperate attempt to resist transformation at all cost.

This is after AfriForum said it would hand over a memorandum to the office of Premier David Makhura on Thursday, to call for Lesufi’s removal as Education MEC.

The group said it would also lay criminal charges against the provincial Education Department, in relation to its alleged misappropriation of more than R900 million, as a result of a finding by the Auditor-General’s 2017/18 report.

Gauteng ANC spokesperson Bones Modise says Lesufi is a subject of malicious campaigns because he wants schools that were exclusively only accessible to Afrikaans speaking people to include those who don’t speak the language.

“It’s an open secret that Afriforum is a group of minorities that seeks to delay social cohesion in the country. Hence we’re calling on all progressive forces to stand and not allow democratic gains to be delayed by narrows interests of Afriforum. Let us all unite in isolating Afriforum because they want to undermine our collective effort in giving learners education that frees them from the bondages and of our set and divided past.”
