Fataar rose to fame in the 1960s with the band ‘The Flames’.
It is believed the group was discovered by Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys while performing in a London club.
The ANC says Fataar belongs to an elite group of musicians whose music managed to cut through racial divisions and forged a united nation in the 1970s at the height of the apartheid regime.
The party has conveyed condolences to the family.
