The African National Congress’ (ANC) biggest region in the country, eThekwini, wants to reconcile with members who abandoned the party ahead of the 2016 local elections.

At least 54 former ANC leaders contested the poll as independents.

Internal wrangling saw some members ditch the ANC opting to stand as Independents in the 2016 local government poll.

Many were unhappy over the party’s list processes.  57 independent candidates contested wards in the eThekwini Metro and only four were successful.

The ANC expelled them from the party but is now extending an olive branch.

They want to reconcile and build unity.

Bheki Ntuli Secretary Ethekwini Region says: “It hasn’t been an easy process because we also had to engage with the communities in those areas and deal with issues that had divided us. It wasn’t just about those who stood as independents and so that is why it has been a process and has taken time.”

The region which plays an oversight role over the Metro is monitoring investigations into maladministration in the city.

Several reports have implicated ANC leaders.

It’s understood that over 320 investigations have been completed. But it’s unclear if any of its recommendations have been implemented.

The party has denied claims of divisions among its leaders.

A regional conference to elect a new executive will most likely take place next year.
