The ANC in Gauteng is fighting to obtain absolute majority in the province.
With 97.22% of the voting districts having been declared, the ANC is at 49.95%, the DA at 27.7%, EFF at 14.45%, FF Plus at 3.59% and IFP at 0.88%.
The province has been hotly contested in this election with some predicting that the ANC would lose to a coalition government.
Predictions had cast doubt on whether this would happen, with the ANC itself saying that it will barely achieve 50% if at all.
The party needs 50% plus one to retain Gauteng. It will be clear if they will achieve this feat once the remaining votes are tallied.
Meanwhile, the DA in Gauteng has admitted that it hasn’t performed as well as it had expected in these elections.
DA Gauteng Mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga says they had hoped to have reached at least 35% of the votes.
He says, “In our own analysis we saw the loss towards the Freedom Front. I think there are two kinds of people who didn’t vote for us. One, there are people that are genuine in the sense of their concerns in how we might have handled a few issues like the Patricia De Lille issue. But here’s the thing, there are people who purely didn’t vote for us because they are saying we are not for a particular culture or ethnic grouping. They want to build little Orania somewhere.”
Final election results are expected to be announced on Saturday.
