ANC, opposition parties engage on Metsimaholo coalition

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State says it has engaged several parties in the Metsimaholo Municipality in a bid to form a coalition council.

In last weeks’ by-elections, the party won 16 seats, the Democratic Alliance (DA) 11 while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) garnered eight council seats. Metsimaholo, based at Sasolburg, therefore remains a hung council.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has grabbed three council seats despite contesting the state power for the first independent of the ANC. The Communist Party has made it clear that the community will play a key role in the party’s decision to form a coalition.

It is also said that the SACP will enter into coalition with the ANC if the governing party agrees to certain demands, including intensifying the fight against corruption.

Meanwhile, the DA is meeting in Cape Town this weekend regarding its position on the future of Metsimaholo.
