AmaZulu secure safety with SuperSport upset

Reading Time: 2 minutes

AmaZulu ensured they cannot be automatically relegated from the Absa Premiership after claiming a fighting 2-0 victory over SuperSport United in Umlazi on Wednesday night.

Second-half goals by Bongi Ntuli and Somila Ntsundwana were enough for Usuthu to stun Matsatsantsa and take their points tally for the season to the magical 30.

That number is widely seen as the safety net for survival and the Durban side can now take things slightly easier, although coach Cavin Johnson refused to get too carried away.

AmaZulu, who visit Baroka FC on Sunday, are 10 points clear of Maritzburg United, and with three matches left, they cannot be caught by their KwaZulu-Natal rivals.

They are also six points clear of second bottom Chippa United. Last night they showed exactly whey they are a much better team than their log position suggest thanks to a strong win over SuperSport. Johnson hailed his team for the way they performed at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

For SuperSport boss, Kaitano Tembo, the result was major blow to their already slim hopes of squeezing into the top three.

Instead of staying a point behind third-placed Bidvest Wits in fourth, they saw the gap widen to four points with three games of the season to go. Coach Tembo admitted it was fair result.

The Tshwane club, who beat title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns in the previous match, are now in the middle of nowhere, a point ahead of Polokwane City and hoping to hold on to the fourth place they currently occupy.

Tembo’s men next face Wits and the coach says that losing in KZN was a blow to their overall aspirations.
