AfriForum against NHI implementation

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Lobby group AfriForum says the National Health Insurance (NHI) should not be implemented as the Health Department is unable to handle taxpayers’ money.

AfriForum has laid charges against head of the Northern Cape Health Department’s Steven Jonkers, as part of its campaign against the introduction of the NHI. AfriForum says the department incurred R412-million in irregular expenditure in the 2017/2018 financial year.

AfriForum’s spokesperson for the NHI campaign Natasha Venter says they’ll lay charges against all provincial health departments across the country as they have incurred R5,8 billion in irregular expenditure.

“We laid these charges because the squandering of taxpayers money is a national crisis and the responsible party should be brought to book. This misappropriation of funds is one of the main reasons why we cannot rely on the government to implement the NHI, they’ve shown that they cannot be trusted with taxpayers money,” says Venter.
