African traditional, religious leaders discuss ways to end child marriage

Reading Time: < 1 minute

African traditional and religious leaders are meeting in Malawi to discuss ways of ending child marriages, mutilation of female genitalia and other harmful traditional practices.

Statistics from the UN Women indicate that every year, 15 million women are married before the age of 18.

The meeting in Blantyre, Malawi, comes after a similar one in Nairobi in August this year, in which it was agreed that traditional and cultural leaders will champion the end to child marriages, FGM and other harmful traditional practices against women and girls.

Those gathered at the meeting agreed that political will to end these harmful practices must include stringent punishment against those who carry out child marriages.
