African politics year review

Reading Time: < 1 minute

It certainly has been an eventful year with elections and politics across the African continent.

The most recent election in Liberia has seen retired football star George Weah become that country’s 25th president.

Before Liberian elections, the continent also witnessed the dramatic Kenyan elections where Uhuru Kenyatta became victorious against opposition leader Raila Odinga in August, but a few days later after voting, the elections were declared null and had to be rerun.

Kenyatta’s arch rival, Odinga, surprised many with a decision to withdraw his participation just few days before the rerun of elections could take place in October.

In November, former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe fired his then deputy president Emmerson Mnangagwa who then decided to exit the country to hide in South Africa for his safety.

A week later, the Defence Force and Zanu-PF veterans took it upon themselves to force Mugabe’s removal which saw Mnangagwa appointed as the new President of the country and party.

In South Africa, the African National Congress held its 54th national elective conference in December which saw Cyril Ramaphosa emerging victorious against Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
