African countries engage to combat terrorism: Zuma

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Jacob Zuma says African Union member states are engaging to combat terrorism in parts of the continent. He was hosting Africa Day celebrations in Pretoria on Thursday.

Al-Qaeda affiliates, Al-Shabaab and Boko Haram are among militant organisations that exist in Africa.

Zuma says South Africa is doing its part to assist nations who face extremism.

“The challenge of terrorism and extremism in some parts of our continent is another key concern of the AU and enjoys ongoing attention. Working with partners in other regions beyond our continent, this goal of peace and stability in every corner of the continent can be achieved. SA continues to humbly contribute troops for peacemaking and peacekeeping and in mediation efforts in our continent.”

Zuma says AU states are concerned over the high number of refugees who remain displaced on the continent. He says members states must focus on assisting refugees.

“The loss of life and displacement of thousands of people who remain refugees in a decolonised Africa remains of serious concern and requires more effort from AU member states. As the AU, we have thus committed ourselves to ended conflicts and silencing the guns in the continent by the year 2020so that our people can live in peace.”
