Activist calls for census on Khoi, San identity

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Khoisan activist and member of the Eastern Cape legislature Christian Martin wants Statistics South Africa to conduct an early census to determine how many citizens identify themselves as Khoi and San.

Martin also wants race groups added to all official government documents pertaining to demographics.

The activist has been on a mission to get government to recognise the Khoisan as the first nation of South Africa and also wants the coloured identity to be scrapped.

“There’s a traditional Khoi San leadership bill that is going to the NCOP, National Assembly and to the President – but we are not recognised on official documents of government as the Khoi and the San. At this moment it is Indian, Coloured, White, African and other. I’m never going to fill my name in there… I’m not ‘other’. I am a Khoi and a San. That is the reason we feel there should be a call for an early census to put this record straight,” says Martin.

Martin further reiterates that their language should be recognised as one of the official ones in the country.
