‘Ramaphosa land announcement is electioneering’

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni has described ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on the land issue as political positioning and electioneering.

Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday, after the party’s Lekgotla, that through a Parliamentary process they would finalise the proposed amendment to the constitution that would outline the conditions under which land could be expropriated without compensation.

Fikeni says the issue of land should be handled with caution as it is a sensitive matter.

He says: “With elections coming, I’m sure the ANC wanted to preempt that part but a careful reading of that very same promise still tried to say the issue of food security, the issue of productivity even in the specified new constitutional amendment will still be affected.”

“So it is prudent to wait and see what the details are but also remember as Abraham Lincoln once said politicians campaign in poetry but they rule in poems,” adds Fikeni.
