Kaizer Chiefs draws with Polokwane City

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Polokwane City and Kaizer Chiefs have to a 1-all draw in Polokwane.

New signing Daniel Akpeyi was back in the starting line-up after he was unable to play in the Nedbank Cup, against a side that was high in confidence after a credible 1-all draw to Absa Premiership contenders Mamelodi Sundowns midweek.

Kaizer Chiefs were awarded a penalty in the opening minutes after a City defender was adjudged to have handled inside the box.

Defender Daniel Cardoso stepped up and scored his third successive penalty for Amakhosi in four games.

Khosi’s joy was short-lived with Walter Musona equalising for the home side six minutes later after another goalkeeping blunder – this time Akpeyi misjudging a long range strike.

The visitors had a chance to regain the lead, but Hendrik Akstein was disposed inside the box midway through the second half that ended 1-all.

Chiefs continued to create scoring opportunities, but lacked firepower upfront.

Dumisani Zuma was denied by George Chigova five minutes from time, and the game ended 1-all.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg United‘s relegation woes intensified after a 3-2 away loss to the high flying Cape Town City at the Athlone Stadium. United are still on 14 after 21 matches, with just two wins so far this season. The Team of Choice have now played two games more than the 15th placed Free State Stars.

It was a win at all cost for bottom of the log Maritzburg United against tricky opposition in Cape Town.

United’s Coach Eric Tinkler was coming against his former team, Cape Town City – the side he guided to the Telkom Knockout victory back in 2016.

However, it was Thamsanqa Mkhize who put City in the lead in the 7th minute with a clinical header.

City was the more attacking side throughout the match, but the visitors found the equaliser through Mxolisi Kunene sixteen minutes into the second half.

The Citizens continued probing and eventually restored their lead when Gift Links scored his fourth goal of the season. United responded immediately with Fortune Makaringe reducing the deficit.

However, there was drama towards the end of the match with the two benches having a go at each other, and United finished the game with 10 men.
