A promising gymnastic career of a 13-year-old from Port Elizabeth is struggling to take off in spite of her talent.

Siphesihle Ngqandu missed all her competitions this year due to a lack of funding. She is part of the successful All Starz Academy and has received training from top Bulgarian coaches since 2014.

She developed an interest in Rhythmic Gymnastics when she was four-years-old and has never looked back. Ngqandu is a true inspiration for her peers and has her eye is firmly fixed on competing in the Olympics one day.

She is the number one ranked rhythmic gymnast under the age of 15.  Her technique and dedication speaks volumes and she has already won two silver medals on the international stage.

“I like dancing, it allows me to be free and do whatever I want with my body. It keeps me active and away from the street, I really like dancing,” says Ngqandu.

Sino Nkosi, 11-years-old, is also making her mark in rhythmic gymnastics. She came third at the African Champs.

“I love gymnastic so much because it helps me with lots of things even with school work.  I do my homework then go the gymnastics thereafter. I do my best every time, I travel a lot,” says Nkosi.

Lorraine Tait has 44 years’ experience in rhythmic gymnastics and dancing. She is the driving force behind these young stars.

“Unfortunately up to now, I have been paying for all of Sihle’s training and travelling, accommodation but unfortunately cannot continue anymore. Sihle didn’t go to Nationals this year because of financial burden that we’re under,” says Tait.

The South African championships next year are the immediate goal. Success there is vital to open the door to international competitions.
